Mission

Bud builds the products, tools and services that transform personal finances into something to engage with, rather than avoid. Their mission is to make money simpler for everyone by building a layer of thoughtful financial confidence into the every day.

Otta's take on Bud

  • Fintech innovation in the UK is being pushed further by the Open Banking standards (requiring institutions to provide APIs to access your financial data). As a result, it has never been easier for companies to interact with your financial world
  • Bud was quick to realise the need for a new financial layer, preparing for Open Banking (and PSD2, the European standard) long before it was launched
  • The product has great design, making it easy for new products (whether it's established companies or small prototypes) to integrate
  • The team built out the biggest use cases first to ensure they were giving potential customers value early on

Amit Gudka

(Co-founder)

Mission

Bulb is a new sustainable energy provider. The mission in their own words: 'We saw the same problems at all the big providers. Inefficiency. Poor service. Expensive tariffs. Dirty energy. It didn't have to be like this. The energy industry can change – and we set up Bulb to lead that change.'

Otta's take on Bulb

  • The traditional energy market has been dominated by the big 6 companies for decades. Consumer energy in the UK has long been associated with rising prices, poor customer service and high profits for incumbent firms
  • Bulb has a really strong brand, which helps differentiate them from incumbent firms and show their customers they're something new (they're leveraging the disillusionment with traditional energy providers to great effect)
  • They have super slick onboarding and make it very easy for their customers to switch over to them. Their generous referral scheme has grown their user base exponentially (they now have over 1 million customers, up from 300k a year ago)
  • Bulb are one of the few carbon neutral energy providers, resonating with their millennial customer base

Founders

Previously founded NetMerchant, which sold European currencies to US merchants. Background in mathematical engineering

Mission

Checkout.com helps companies accept more payments around the world through one integration. Processing 150+ currencies, Checkout.com has direct access to Visa, Mastercard, American Express, all major international cards as well as popular alternative and local payment methods.

Otta's take on Checkout.com

  • The payments industry has exploded in the last decade as ecommerce continues to grow and the use of cash falls
  • At the same time, legacy payment companies are going through a period of consolidation to try and hold on to their dominant position and scale in the face of fierce competition (Already in 2019, FIS has acquired Worldpay for $35bn; Fiserv has acquired First Data for $22bn)
  • Checkout.com have high quality proprietary technology (their platform has been designed from the outset so they can easily deliver incremental services as they expand their offering) and claim to offer the most comprehensive cross-border payment solution for digital commerce
  • Customers include Samsung, EasyJet, Deliveroo and Virgin Active

Our methodology

It's really tricky to pick a manageable number of companies to dig deep into, so we relied on three areas to reach our shortlist

  1. Plenty of jobs available. Given our list is for job-seekers, we looked closely at the number of roles available over recent months. We only want to show you the companies that are hiring in numbers
  2. High growth. It's hard to find a metric for growth to compare all companies. We considered the last two fundraises (£-value and date) as this data is readily available
  3. Strong investors. We know that not all great companies have great investors, but a strong investor (e.g. Index Ventures, who backed Facebook) is a useful signal that the company is going places. The investor will have done their homework to test the market, the business potential, the management team’s capabilities, etc
